STUDENT ACTIVITIES

TED Talk for Tuesday, March 9: Does the Boston fern you’re dutifully misting each morning appreciate your care? Or can the spreading oak in your local park take umbrage at the kids climbing its knotted branches? Not likely, says Italian professor and researcher Stefano Mancuso, but that doesn’t mean that these same living organisms aren’t capable of incredibly sophisticated and dynamic forms of awareness and communication. Mancuso’s team explore how plants communicate, or “signal,” with each other, using a complex internal analysis system to find nutrients, spread their species and even defend themselves against predators.

Key Club will be selling Yuda Bands for $10 in the cafeteria during lunch for the next few weeks. Yuda bands are unique handmade bracelets made in Guatemala and this year all of Edgewood’s sales will go towards supporting the education of Aubrey Takaedza, a student in Zimbabwe. To learn more about Aubrey’s story, you can watch this video linked here: https://youtu.be/I_0ZkHxwA-Y

The track and field teams are in need of 2-3 managers for this season. Managers would need to be available to stay after school until around 4:30 PM each day. Students would be responsible to help with tracking attendance and organization. Please contact Coach Doering if you have any interest or questions.

Tryouts for EHS 2021-2022 Cheerleaders will be held on March 9 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, March 10 from 5:30 PM- 7:30 PM and March 12 starting at 5:30 PM. Edgewood High School senior, April Strawn, was recently featured in Bloom Magazine for illustrating Michael Koryta’s (pen name Scott Carson) latest novel, The Chill. April was just 16 years old when she collaborated with the author, adjusted her work based on feedback, and met publishing deadlines. Her efforts produced the results Koryta was striving for – visually depicting the point-of-view of an eight-year-old character. If you want to see some of April’s designs, go to instagram.com/tia_drawgon. Also, check-out the supernatural, terrifying thriller, The Chill, in the EHS library.
